What SnipeOS is
A complete, installable Linux desktop aimed at creators. Lubuntu 26.04 LTS underneath, a curated production toolchain on top, LXQt throughout.
Where stock Lubuntu gives you a fast desktop and asks you to hunt for applications, SnipeOS hands you a full stack the moment the installer finishes: office suite, privacy-first browser, real email, vector and raster graphics, photo management, three video editors, a streaming studio, professional audio tools, 3D modelling, desktop publishing, screenwriting, a media centre, games, and a working Windows compatibility layer.
SnipeOS is an honest remaster, not a from-scratch OS. It is a layered squashfs image on Lubuntu’s minimal, standard, and live layers, with three SnipeOS layers on top: snipeos (apps and runtime delta), runtime (fix hooks), and brandfix (branding, Calamares, live helpers). That architecture inherits Ubuntu 26.04 security updates while keeping Snipe identity cleanly layered.
Performance philosophy
Every replacement serves one goal: minimise resource usage so memory, CPU, and disk belong to your work. Snipe Browser idles around 23 MB on a single tab because telemetry, sync, and preloaders were deleted from the binary. SnipeOffice is also tweaked to run leaner than stock LibreOffice on the same hardware.
The structural change is OS-level memory cleaning when applications close. Resources return immediately instead of lingering. Serial creative workflows (Darktable, then Krita, then Scribus, then Kdenlive, then OBS) stay in clean headroom instead of slowly swapping.
Removal is a feature. Snap stubs for browser and mail are replaced with real .deb packages. Stock LibreOffice apps are purged while their runtime libraries stay for SnipeOffice. Things run because you launched them, and they stop when you stop them.
Who it is good for
Older or modest hardware
Boots from about 512 MB. Comfortable everyday desktop at 2 GB. Tested on a range of older amd64 machines, including offline UEFI installs.
Privacy-conscious users
Local passwords, binary-level telemetry removal, notes in plain files, no account required for the default desktop.
Households and classrooms
OpenShot for beginners, full SnipeOffice for students, Krita and Blender when ambition grows, LTS updates through April 2029.
Gamers who want a machine tonight
i386 enabled, 32-bit libraries and Mesa Vulkan seeded, wineserver on PATH. Free games shelf included.

Who should look elsewhere
Users welded to GNOME or KDE-specific tooling will be happier on those desktops. Exotic wireless chips that struggle on Ubuntu will struggle here too. Check Wi-Fi against Ubuntu 26.04 before wiping a sole laptop, or plan on Ethernet. If you need cutting-edge non-LTS packages the week they ship, this is the wrong aisle: SnipeOS trades novelty for a stable LTS base on purpose.
