# Snipe Browser for macOS 12 and up

**Channel:** `mac`
**Product line:** Snipe Browser (desktop)
**Documented build:** `124.0.6367.207.1`
**Official label (About):** `Version 124.0.6367.207.1 (Official Build, Snipe Browser) (x86_64)`
**Evidence date:** 10 August 2026
**Reference hardware:** MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), macOS Monterey 12.7.6, 8 GB RAM

This document describes the **macOS 12+** build of Snipe Browser as captured in the `macos12andup/` screenshot set and as wired into the site’s version channel system (`/version/latest-mac.txt`, `channels.json` key `mac`). It is a separate release line from the Windows/Linux **140.x** desktop builds and from Android **147.x**.

## 1. Identity

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Product name | Snipe / Snipe Browser |
| Vendor | Snipe Group Limited |
| Engine | Blink (Chromium) |
| Chromium major | **124** |
| Full version string | **124.0.6367.207.1** |
| Architecture | **x86_64** (Intel Mac) |
| Build type | Official Build, Snipe Browser |
| User-agent product token | `Snipe/124.0.6367.207.1` (alongside a Chrome-compatible Chromium token) |
| Settings branding | Settings sidebar ends with **About Snipe**; chrome:// URLs retain Chromium path names |
| Copyright (About) | Copyright 2026 Snipe Group Limited. All rights reserved. |
| Upstream credit | “Snipe is made possible by the Chromium open source project and other open source software.” |

Snipe on macOS is a **de-Googled Chromium-family desktop browser**, not a Safari wrapper and not a thin reskin of stock Chrome. The About page, omnibox branding, new-tab portal, and settings chrome all identify as Snipe while the internal settings URLs remain the Chromium `chrome://settings/...` namespace.

## 2. Platform and support floor

### 2.1 Operating system

- **Target:** macOS **12 (Monterey) and newer**
- **Validated capture:** macOS Monterey **12.7.6**
- Folder / channel naming: `macos12andup` / channel id `mac`

### 2.2 Hardware class proven in gallery

Captured on a **2012-era Intel MacBook Pro**:

| Item | Captured value |
|---|---|
| Model | MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) |
| CPU | 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 |
| RAM | 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 |
| GPU | Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB |
| Bitness | 64-bit |
| Client arch report | `x86 / 64-bit` (what-is-my-browser) |

The build string is explicitly **`(x86_64)`**. This document does **not** claim an Apple Silicon (`arm64`) universal binary unless a later About/version capture shows one.

### 2.3 How this channel differs from other Snipe desktops

| Channel | Typical latest | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 x64 / x86 | 140.0.7339.129 | Main desktop line |
| Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 9, Ubuntu, openSUSE, generic Linux | 140.0.7339.127 | Same Chromium 140 family |
| Windows Vista / XP / Server 2003 | 144.0.7559.256 | Separate legacy track |
| **macOS 12+** | **124.0.6367.207.1** | **Separate 124.x track** |
| Android 10+ | 147.0.7727.56 | Mobile track |

**Do not** compare a Mac install against Windows/Linux 140.x. A Mac on `124.0.6367.207.1` that is told “update to 140.0.7339.x” is a **channel mis-route**, not a real Mac upgrade path.

Site wiring for the Mac channel:

- Static latest file: `/version/latest-mac.txt` → `124.0.6367.207.1`
- `channels.json` → `"mac": { "latest": "124.0.6367.207.1", "versionFile": "/version/latest-mac.txt", ... }`
- Detector / check pages must resolve `os.id === 'mac'` (or Mac UA) to channel `mac`, never `default` / `win64`

---

## 3. Version verification (how to prove the build)

### 3.1 In-app

1. Open **Settings → About Snipe**, or navigate to `chrome://settings/help`
2. Confirm:
   - **Version 124.0.6367.207.1 (Official Build, Snipe Browser) (x86_64)**
3. Available actions on that page (as captured):
   - **Check for updates**
   - **Get help with Snipe**
   - **GitHub project page**

### 3.2 Site detector

On `what-is-my-browser` / full browser check, a correct Mac session reports:

- Browser: **Snipe**
- Version: **124.0.6367.207.1**
- Engine: **Blink (Chromium)**
- Chromium-based: **Yes**
- On Snipe: **Yes · up to date** (when matched to channel `mac`)
- OS: **macOS**, version e.g. **12.7.6**, 64-bit

Example summary line captured on the reference machine:

> You’re using **Snipe 124** on **macOS 12.7.6 64-bit.**

### 3.3 Update model

Consistent with other Snipe platforms:

- Update checks fetch a **static version file** (Mac: `/version/latest-mac.txt`)
- **No identifiers** in that request beyond ordinary HTTP connection metadata
- Comparison is local
- **No forced / silent upgrades**

---

## 4. Privacy and product posture (this build)

Aligned with the desktop Snipe philosophy and the Privacy Policy’s macOS provisions:

- **No Google account requirement** to use the browser
- **No forced cloud sync** for the everyday profile
- **Local-only password / autofill storage** (see settings below)
- **No AI assistant / generative sidebar** baked into the product story
- Desktop adblocking policy: **uBlock Origin in the core** on desktop platforms (see site Adblocking policy); Mac is a desktop build
- Profile data lives under the user’s macOS Library / Chromium-style profile paths (local; deletable by the user)
- Gatekeeper / notarisation lookups, if/when a distributed `.app` or `.dmg` is Gatekeeper-checked, are **Apple OS behaviour**, not Snipe telemetry

Captured privacy UI (`chrome://settings/privacy`):

- Privacy Guide entry (“Review key privacy and security controls in Chromium”)
- Safety Check card
- Clear browsing data
- **Third-party cookies are blocked** (status shown on the captured privacy page)
- Security / Safe Browsing settings entry present in the Chromium settings tree (Snipe’s product messaging elsewhere emphasises removal of Google Safe Browsing *cloud* lookups on the de-Googled line; treat chrome:// labels as Chromium UI ancestry, not as proof of Google cloud telemetry)

## 5. New tab and omnibox behaviour

### 5.1 New Tab portal

Dark Snipe-branded start page with:

- Large Snipe mark + wordmark
- Search field: **“Search with SnipeSearch…”** + green **Search**
- Shortcut grids:

**Social**

- Toot Snipe (Mastodon)
- Snipe Diaspora (Diaspora)
- Snipe Pics (Pixelfed)
- SnipeSocial
- TTWrite
- SnipeSearch Video (PeerTube)

**Services**

- SnipeSearch
- Snipe Adclicks
- SnipeOffice
- SnipeSearch Ark
- SnipeSearch Maps
- SnipeSearch Asia
- SnipeSearch Info

**Resources** (partially visible in captures)

- Includes tiles such as Snipe Play, media / support style shortcuts

First-run / default-browser banner observed: **“Chromium isn’t your default browser”** with **Set as default** (Chromium ancestry string; product is still Snipe).

### 5.2 Omnibox / search engine

Captured at `chrome://settings/search`:

- **Search engine used in the address bar:** **No Search**
- Omnibox placeholder observed: **“Search No Search or type a URL”**
- Separate page search remains available via the new-tab SnipeSearch field

This is a deliberate Mac capture detail: address-bar search can be **No Search** while the new-tab portal still routes queries through SnipeSearch.

---

## 6. Settings surface (captured pages)

All of the following were captured on the Monterey reference machine with Snipe branding in the chrome (logo + “Snipe” in the address-bar chip / About).

| chrome:// path | UI title | Notes from capture |
|---|---|---|
| `chrome://settings/people` | About you | Profile (e.g. “Work”); Import bookmarks and settings |
| `chrome://settings/autofill` | Autofill and passwords | Password Manager; Payment methods; Addresses and more |
| `chrome://settings/privacy` | Privacy and security | Privacy Guide; Safety Check; third-party cookies blocked |
| `chrome://settings/performance` | Performance | Memory Saver; Energy Saver; Preload pages |
| `chrome://settings/appearance` | Appearance | Theme link “Open Snipe Ark”; Device mode; bookmarks bar; side panel side; fonts; zoom; **Show warning before quitting with ⌘Q** (macOS-specific) |
| `chrome://settings/search` | Search engine | Address bar = **No Search** |
| `chrome://settings/help` | About Snipe | Version **124.0.6367.207.1**, x86_64, Official Build |

Sidebar also exposes (standard Chromium settings tree, Snipe-labelled): Default browser, On startup, Languages, Downloads, Accessibility, System, Reset settings, Extensions, Get extensions, About Snipe.

### 6.1 Performance defaults observed on the reference profile

- **Memory Saver:** Off
- **Energy Saver:** On — “Turn on only when my battery is at 20% or lower”
- **Preload pages:** Off

These are profile settings, not hard-coded product invariants; document them as captured state.

### 6.2 Appearance notes (macOS)

- Mode: **Device** (follow system light/dark)
- Bookmarks bar: On (captured)
- Side panel: Show on right (captured)
- Font size: Medium (Recommended)
- Page zoom: 100%
- **Show warning before quitting with ⌘Q:** On — confirms native macOS quit semantics are wired

## 7. Ecosystem sites exercised on this build

The gallery shows this Mac build loading the wider SnipeSearch network without platform breakage (ordinary HTTPS browsing):

| Destination | Example URL / note |
|---|---|
| Mastodon (Toot) | `https://toot.snipesearch.co.uk/@tootsnipe` |
| SnipeSocial | `https://www.snipesocial.co.uk/` |
| SnipeSearch Adclicks | `https://adclick.snipesearch.co.uk/` |
| SnipeOffice | `https://snipeoffice.org/` |
| SnipeSearch Asia | `https://snipesearch.asia/` |
| SnipeSearch Maps | `https://maps.snipesearch.net/viewer/home` |
| SnipeSearch Music / Support | Open as background tabs in several settings shots |

Toolbar behaviour on these pages is normal Chromium-class: lock icon, extensions puzzle, side panel, profile avatar, three-dot menu. Extensions UI is present (puzzle piece); specific shipped extension list is not exhaustively inventoried in the About capture.

## 8. What this build is *not*

- **Not** the Windows/Linux **140.0.7339.x** line
- **Not** Android **147.x**
- **Not** proven here as an Apple Silicon universal binary (About says **x86_64**)
- **Not** macOS versions older than 12 (folder / naming is **12 and up**; older OS support is unstated by this evidence set)
- **Not** a requirement to use a Microsoft or Google login for basic browsing

---

## 9. Distribution and packaging

| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Artifact | `Snipe-12-UP.zip` |
| Host | snipebrowser.com (direct; not Archive.org) |
| Direct ZIP | https://snipebrowser.com/macos12andup/Snipe-12-UP.zip |
| Product page | `/macos12andup/` (`index.html` / `index.php`) |
| Channel id | `mac` |
| Latest file | `/version/latest-mac.txt` → `124.0.6367.207.1` |
| Install | Unzip → drag `Snipe.app` to Applications → Gatekeeper allow on first open if needed |

Until an Apple Silicon build is published, treat **x86_64** as the documented architecture.

## 11. One-line summary

**Snipe Browser for macOS 12+ is Official Build `124.0.6367.207.1` (x86_64): a Chromium 124 / Blink desktop Snipe with the standard de-Googled privacy posture, Snipe new-tab ecosystem portal, local autofill/passwords, core desktop adblocking policy, and a dedicated update channel that must never be confused with the Windows/Linux 140 line.**
